PRESS RELEASE

July 22, 2024: Chelsea, QC — On Thursday, July 18th, the Village of Old Chelsea, a prime tourism-recreation destination just a short distance from downtown Gatineau and Ottawa, welcomed invited guests, dignitaries and media to the Grand Opening of Terrasse du Square. This event celebrated the completion of a two year development initiative.

The same community-minded business people behind the Square Old Chelsea group, developed  this new centrally located space in part due to funding received from both a grant from Outaouais Tourism through a program from the Ministry of Tourism of Quebec and an interest-free loan from Canada Economic Development.

Visitors to the space are invited to sit back and enjoy live, local entertainment, a weekly market, outdoor movies as well as a game area designated for pétanque, washer toss, jumbo Jenga and more. A culinary fusion of snacks, full meals and drinks are available at Terrasse du Square thanks to a licensed outside kitchen with a difference: its tantalizing menu includes Korean, Mexican, Vietnamese and other dishes, mocktails and cocktails and soft-swirl ice cream.

Since its soft opening earlier this spring, Terrasse du Square has already become a vibrant social hub and a welcome addition to the community as well as a complement to the existing adjacent establishments, Chelsea Pub, Biscotti & Cie Café, Distillerie du Square, La Petite Grocerie, and Les Lofts du Village, a boutique hotel. Future plans include weekly programming throughout the summer and into the fall such as live DJs and dancing, open mic nights, Jazz nights and Le 5 à 7 Podcast. An Oktoberfest celebration and a Christmas Market are also in the works.

“It’s been a work of love from start to finish, and we are most grateful for the funding we have received from EDC and Outaouais Tourism to create this amazing space. We look forward to continuing to host fabulous events throughout the year that perfectly complement the overall vibe of Square Old Chelsea.” says Manuela Teixeira, CEO and Co-owner, Square Old Chelsea.

“The opening of the new Terrasse du Square is among the tourism gems of our region. I am proud that CED was able to contribute to the development with an interest-free loan development. This investment reflects our community commitment and our passion for creating a vibrant space blending culinary delights, diverse entertainment, and conviviality. Congratulations to the dedicated entrepreneurs celebrating the completion of a two-year project, including the Distillerie du Square, which has become a gathering place for all. The Terrasse du Square is now a must-visit destination, showcasing the spirit of our community.” says Sophie Chatel, Member of Parliament for Pontiac.

"Tourisme Outaouais is proud to have supported the development of Terrasse du Square through the Regional Tourism Partnership Agreement of the Ministry of Tourism of Quebec. This new gathering space wonderfully enhances the offerings of Square Old Chelsea, which already attracts a large number of visitors from near and far. It also contributes to the promotion of local tourism by offering a variety of activities that showcase local businesses and products," says Martine Deschênes, Interim Executive Director of Tourisme Outaouais.
