PRESS RELEASE
Coinciding with Canada’s Forest Week and National Tree Day, Canadensis Botanical Garden Society hosts its 4th annual Fall Celebration on Saturday, September 28th. Garden and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to come together to experience nature in all its Fall splendour at the Canadensis Garden site at the Central Experimental Farm. Everyone is welcome to participate in free activities, learning experiences, art exhibits, live music, and an official tree-planting ceremony of twelve native trees.
The Canadensis Botanical Garden Society's Fall Celebration provides visitors of all ages with educational, interactive and enjoyable experiences. For garden enthusiasts, Ottawa Master Gardeners, horticulture societies and other groups will be onsite to offer free advice.
“We want to build support and inspire others to join our movement to build a botanical garden in Ottawa," says Kathleen Fischer, spokesperson and board member of Canadensis.
Art lovers will enjoy an expansive botanical art expo and sale featuring works by over 20 artists courtesy of Foyer Gallery and Art in the Neighbourhood. Guests can stroll the Beyond the Edge: Artists’ Garden, an exhibit of 9 large-scale sculptures installed on the site beginning in 2014.
For children and families, the Fall Celebration has interactive art activities like craft tables, a family scavenger hunt, face painting, a straw bale play area and horse-drawn wagon rides by Ottawa’s own Cundell Stables. Musical activities include interactive play in the ludophone garden with Jesse Stewart and performances by award-winning local Folk-Canadiana artist Jessica Pearson.
Guided site tours will share information about Canada’s native trees and plans for the future Botanical Garden. These tours will be led by Canadensis Chair, Gérald Lajeunesse whose accomplishments span over three decades in landscape architecture and urban design, including a career as chief landscape and project director at the NCC.
We welcome all to enjoy the FREE fall splendor at the future Botanical Garden of Canada.
About Canadensis Garden
Canadensis is a New Latin term used in Taxonomy to describe species of plants that are native to Canada. The Canadensis Garden occupies a 34-acre parcel of land at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa where plans are developing to create a national botanical garden of international appeal in the heart of the nation’s capital. As a designated National Historic Site and Cultural Landscape, the location at the Central Experimental Farm is already one of Ottawa’s major attractions. Comprising the Dominion Arboretum, Fletcher Wildlife Garden, Ornamental Gardens, Greenhouses, Heritage buildings and the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, these features of the Farm form a cluster of complementary assets.
The Canadensis Botanical Garden Society members and volunteers are working to get support for a national botanical garden on the very grounds first envisaged for this use over 130+ years ago and creating a legacy benefiting all Canadians for generations to come. Significant economic benefits to the Capital Region from The Garden will be derived from visitors, tourism, initial construction activity and annual operating expenditures.
About National Forest Week
National Forest Week (NFW) is celebrated across Canada by many individuals and diverse governmental and non governmental organizations. During NFW, Canadians are invited to learn more about Canada’s forest heritage and to raise awareness about this valuable and renewable resource. Forests are fundamental to our economy, culture, traditions and history – and to our future. Communities, families and individuals depend on forests for their livelihood and way of life.
